Keijsers Koning is excited to present Looking through the window, an exhibition showcasing the work by Quinci Baker, Kate Barbee, and Michelle Cortez Gonzales. The show delves into the realms of these three women as they navigate perceptions of themselves and the profound influence on both their lives and their creative expressions. From vibrant hues to intricate textures and the use of uncommon materials, the viewer will experience an array of confidence and compassion.
Quinci Baker, who is originally from the DC area, explores her personal journey through art, delving into childhood memories and her craft lineage. Baker creates her works through intricate layers of materials, such as hair beads and accessories. Her mixed media practice is deeply inspired by collective imagination and loss. Baker earned her BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art and MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art in 2022. She recently showed with Keijsers Koning for Artsy’s Foundations; The Hole, NYC; Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, NYC; Cierra Britton Gallery, Brooklyn; Mehari Sequar, DC.
Kate Barbee is born and raised in Dallas but currently resides in NYC. Barbee’s paintings are densely layered with color, creating a rhythmic study of bodily movement to a visceral impression. Delving into the essence of materials, she navigates the inherent qualities of paper creating more methodical compositions and the layered canvas to saturate color and bodies. Her creations hover between figuration and abstraction maintaining an intriguing ambiguity yet always truthful and fresh. The artist received her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin, TX and has notable shown at Michael Kohn Gallery; Sargent’s Daughter, NYC; Albertz Benda, NY.
Michelle Cortez Gonzales, a Fort Worth native and resident, is a new voice out of Northern Texas. Gonzales's work is constructed by layering textiles, sewingand embroidering them together to form a textured surface. Upon this foundation, she introduces paint, infusing each piece with a spectrum of colors, tones and fragmented imagery alluding to the state of existing between two identities as a third generation Mexican American. Employing domestic craft techniques rooted in tradition like sewing and embroidery along with symbols drawn from her culture, she delves into themes of identity, the outsider status, and their deep effects on familial relationships and connections. Gonzales has a BFA in painting from the University of Texas at Arlington, and her MFA in painting from the University of Dallas. Her work has been exhibited with: Anya Tish Gallery, Houston, TX; Presa House Gallery, San Antonio, TX; Dallas Art Fair Keijsers Koning; and is included in a forthcoming group show at Talley Dunn Gallery.
